In 1942, when Mauritius was still a Crown colony, the government began building a Royal Naval Air Station at Plaisance near Mahébourg as part of the island nation's defenses.

After WWII, the Royal Air Force took over this, and civilian operations began shortly after. The civil airport began operating after World War II, which boosted the Mauritian economy.

On September 10, 1972, a Twin Otter operated by Air Mauritius made history by being the first commercial airline to fly to the island of Rodrigues. The trip originated at Plaisance Airport and landed at the Plaine Corail Airport (now Sir Gatan Duval Airport) on Rodrigues (3B-NAB). ATR 42-300 and ATR 42-500 twin turboprops eventually replaced the older Twin Otters.

The rest of 1986 saw construction work begin to allow for larger planes. Since increased passenger traffic was anticipated, a new terminal was constructed beside an adjacent parking garage and customs office for international flights. The new terminal has two stories and space for up to four planes using airbridges at once.

About Mauritius

As the island of Tromelin was not explicitly mentioned in the Treaty of Paris, it is a source of contention between France and Mauritius. Until achieving independence in 1968, Mauritius remained a British colony focused on plantations.

The Chagos Archipelago was once a part of Mauritius. Still, in 1965 it was separated from Mauritius and became part of British Indian Ocean Territory (BIOT). Between 1968 and 1973, the local population was forcibly removed, and the United States leased the largest island, Diego Garcia. Mauritius and the United Kingdom claim the Chagos Islands as their own. However, this claim has been challenged.

The United Kingdom was advised by the International Court of Justice to return the Chagos Islands to Mauritius in 2019. The International Tribunal for the Law of the Sea backed this up in 2021, declaring that the United Kingdom has "no jurisdiction over the Chagos Islands."
